Introduce learning theory as the foundation for the design and implementation of instruction and training. Students learn to evaluate and select appropriate applied learning theories, apply behavioral, cognitive and constructivist learning theories. Discuss how to select appropriate pedagogy according to a specific delivery model and learner. Explore cultural sensitivities in teaching and learning in a highly connected world.
Graduate Outcome 3:
Articulate and analyze behavioral, cognitive, and social-based learning theories
Evaluate, select, and apply appropriate learning theories for a specific instructional project
Select appropriate pedagogy according to a specific delivery model and learner outcomes
Develop an awareness of cultural diversity in learning traits
Work Examples Critical Review This paper gave us an opportunity to evaluate a research article and judge the validity and significance of the work. I chose to review a paper about one-to-one computers in collaborative work.
Applying Learning Theories and Instructional Strategies In this document I describe how I would apply instructional strategies in a learning event after choosing a learning theories to describe my learners. This is one of the many chances that the members of my cohort had to develop our understanding of the differences between a Learning Theory and an Instructional Strategy. I chose to focus on Cognitive Learning Theory.
IST 526 Interactive Multimedia Instruction ~4 Credits
Study professional tools for media creation and select and use appropriate media tools to develop multimedia learning solutions to an instructional problem. Students build a multimedia prototype and conduct an evaluation to assess quality and usability of their project and make further revisions.
Graduate Learning Outcome 4:
Develop interactive multimedia with appropriate feedback for instructional purpose
Select and use appropriate media tools to develop a solution to an instructional problem
Develop learning objects that are based upon appropriate learning theories
Work Examples Assessment, Tracking, & Reporting For this assignment we had to respond to a Request For Proposal to design an online writing course for a college. The real purpose of the assignment was to design a SCORM complaint Adobe Captivate project. I used drag and drop, multiple choice, fill in the blank, short response, and hot spot activities. The SCORM complaint .zip file will also load to any SCORM complaint Learning Management System and report the quiz results.
Final Project: Common Core's Standards for Mathematical Practice The final project was intended to be a cover all the Standards of Mathematical Practice; however, I was advised to reduce the number of standards I used for the project. While completing this project it became clear that taking notes on the layout is quite helpful and it has helped me develop my storyboard to include notes like the position of common objects. There is also a copy of the Instructional Design Document and the CSUMB permission release form.
IST 531 Multimedia Tools 1: Audio & Video ~ 2 Credits
Audio&Video Production: Is intended for students who want to acquire the skills and expertise necessary to produce informational audio and videos intended for interactive multimedia projects. The emphasis will be to create media that one can incorporate into classroom and corporate training environments. Graduate Learning Outcome 6:
Explore interests in areas other than IST core emphases
Broaden knowledge and skills that open wider career opportunities
Work Example I created an instructional video for leveling a MakerBot Replicator 2 build plate. I feel I could have done better with this video, but it was quite difficult to get sufficient lighting for such a small subject. Using a cellphone camera also made it difficult to get quality video so close to a subject. This video will not be my last, I intend to create some more videos and photography projects when I have completed the requirements of the MIST program.
